WELCOME to “OUR HISTORY, OUR HERITAGE”
a brand new creative education website with a difference! Funding from Abolition 200 in 2007 has contributed to the building of this website. We have used the bi-centenary of Britain’s abolition of the slave trade, to commemorate our African, Caribbean and British ancestors and elders struggles, past and present in three public talks 2 Slaves Who Abolished Slavery by eminent Caribbean historian Dr. Richard Hart and the third Soul and Resistance by historian and writer Dr Edson Burton. We celebrate the sacrifices and strength of purpose of our ancestors that finally succeeded in forcing forward the British timetable for abolition. See: Did You Know Our aim is not only to provide innovative citizenship resources concerning African Caribbean and British peoples struggles past and present but also to promote a model of learning that encourages self-development and critical thinking amongst students, fostering a sense of pride and responsibility for the world we live in. It is all about inclusiveness, so young people, families, parents and teachers can get involved. See: What We Do and let’s have your views!

We are especially keen to contact teachers of years 5 and 6, 7 and 8 Citizenship/ literacy/arts/.history to help us pilot new cross curricular creative project work in schools with our Project Share Citizenship section where you will find a sample of our structured creative sessions: ‘Plotting the Emancipation Rebellion’ a class drama activity and a compelling young peoples’ narrative onthe Sugar Trade: ‘Once Upon a Caribbean’ by our eminent contributor/ member Dr Richard Hart, who has written seven books on Caribbean history. This is for your use however you wish with your students or for your own general reading, Under Resources, you will find out where to obtain Richard Hart’s books. Do browse, utilise and absorb. If you like what you see and want more, let us know. Do feedback though with any comments, ideas or suggestions you have.

i stand tallI STAND TALL

I stand tall,
Tall in the shadows of ancestors,
I carry myself
My head held high
Dauntless and undeterred by others penetrable gaze.
I distinguish myself only by
repeatedly resisting others need
to define and control
How or what I should not be.
